Pakistan finished the stronger side on the first day of the third Test against England at Edgbaston, bowling England out for 297 at the close of play after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. Pakistan's main wrecker-in-chief was pacer Sohail Khan, who finished the day with figures of 5/96.
Khan had last played a Test match back in 2011. He showed no signs of rust, however, picking up the wickets of Alex Hales and Joe Root in the first twelve overs. Captain Alastair Cook scored a breezy 52-ball 45 but Rahat Ali trapped him in front as England went to lunch at 99/3.
Gary Ballance and James Vince looked to repair the damage, but Khan broke the budding partnership by getting Vince to edge to second slip for 39. A poor shot from Johnny Bairstow also led to another wicket for Khan and England found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 158/5.
Ballance and Moeen Ali put on a 62-run partnership before another prodigious turner from Yasir Shah got the better of Ballance for a well-composed 70. Rahat Ali dismissed Chris Woakes as well cheaply and Mohammad Amir also joined the show, accounting Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali. Finally, Khan got a well-deserved five-wicket haul, picking up England's last man James Anderson to dismiss England out for a score below 300.
