Carlo Ancelotti got his hands on the first piece of silverware after taking over the reins at Bayern Munich as they ran away with a 2-0 scoreline. Borussia Dortmund missed a host of chances, while the German champions were ruthless and scored two second-half goals through Arturo Vidal and Thomas Muller to lift the German Super Cup.

Bayern, for all their league dominance, have lost the corresponding fixture on three consecutive occasions previously. Dortmund's pace was troubling the Bayern backline but the forwards were utterly wasteful up front. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to latch on to a glorious 70-yard cross from new signing Marc Bartra. The Gabon forward had another chance a few minutes later but shot over the bar from close range.

The best chance of the half fell to Vidal, who was played on goal by Javi Martinez, who made a surging run to put his teammate through, but the Chilean inexplicably failed to latch onto the rebound from two yards out. It was Dortmund who created openings at the start of the second half too. Felix Passlack and Ousmane Dembele created decent openings, but failed to put one past the indefatigable Manuel Neuer.

The second half also witnessed the good and the dark side of Frank Ribery. Robert Lewandowski was played through by the French winger on the left, and the forward's cut-back fell kindly for Vidal, who thumped the ball into the net. Muller grabbed Munich's second, which came off a corner. Former Dortmund man, Mats Hummels, who was subject to a chorus of boos from the incensed home crowd, towered above the Dortmund defense to knock the ball down in the path of Muller. The forward doubled lead.

Tempers flared up too and Ribery should have been sent off for his petulant reaction to Passlack's tackle; the Frenchman only got a yellow. Mario Gotze, who just went back to Dortmund from Munch, was confined to the bench.
