Last Tuesday, news emerged that wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze medal which he won at the 2012 Olympics in London in the 60 kg freestyle category could be upgraded to silver. Then on Sunday, new reports stated that the Indian could be in chance of winning the gold medal as Azerbaijan's Toghrul Asgarov, who had won gold in 2012, had tested positive for banned substances.
However, there has been no official confirmation from any quarter yet, with even the Wrestling Federation of India being clueless of the development.
Chances of Dutt taking the gold are slim since Asgarov had beaten United States' Coleman Scott, the other bronze medallist, in the semi-finals. According to the rulebook, if Asgarov is disqualified, Scott would be the first choice for gold since it was he who had lost to the Azerbaijan wrestler in the semi-finals.
The same rule was applied for Dutt’s silver medal. He had lost in the pre-quarters to Kudukhov and then gone on to win the bronze through repechage.
So, an upgrade to gold seems unlikely for Dutt. Besides, he himself has to pass the doping tests that the others succumbed to. For now, all eyes are on the International Olympic Committee.
