Novak Djokovic seems to have lady luck favouring him at the US Open. On Wednesday, for the third time in the tournament, Djokovic’s opponent retired hurt to hand the Serb a spot in the semi-final. The Serb was leading Jo-Wilfried Tsonga by two sets to love, before the Frenchman retired hurt in the third with a knee injury.
In round two, Djokovic received a walkover after Jiri Vesely withdrew owing to a forearm injury. Immediately in the next round, Mikhail Youzhny also opted out with a leg injury after Djokovic was leading the first set 4-2. The defending champion will hope that no other opponent gets injured as he looks to bag another US Open title.
Monfils demolishes Nadal's conqueror
Gael Monfils beat countryman Lucas Pouille, who had knocked out Rafael Nadal, in straight sets to book his semi-final spot opposite Djokovic. Monfils beat Pouille 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to set up the high octane semi-final showdown with the world No. 1. Monfils is yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows and looks set to take the fight to Djokovic.
Kerber defeats last year’s runner-up
Second seed German Angelique Kerber beat 2015 US Open finalist Roberta Vinci of Italy 7-5, 6-0 in the quarter-finals. Keber, who will be world No. 1 if she wins the tournament, was ruthless in the second set as she outclassed the Italian with a 6-0 rout that lasted for 24 minutes.
Wozniacki through to semis
Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki made it to US Open semi-finals after she beat Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets in New York. The Dane demolished her injury-hit opponent 6-0, 6-2 to set-up her semi-final clash with Kerber.
