Deepa Malik became the first Indian woman to win a medal in the history of the Paralympics when she clinched the silver medal in the Women's Shot Put F53 event on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro, recording a personal best of 4.61 meters. It was India's third medal in the games after Mariyappan Thangavelu had clinched a gold and Varun Bhati, bronze in the men's high jump T42 event on the second day.
Bahrain's Fathima Nedham's clinched the gold medal, beating Malik's effort with a throw of 4.76 m while Greece's Dimitra Korokida walked away the bronze medal, recording a best of 4.28 m.
The 45-year-old Malik is the oldest member of the Indian contingent and is the current Asian record holder in the javelin throw. She also won silver in the shot put and discus throw events at the 2011 World Championships and received the Arjuna award in 2012.
Malik had started with a modest of 4.26 m with her first attempt but landed her second attempt with a throw of 4.49 m. The Haryana-based athlete's third throw was recorded at 4.41 m.
