Bad news, all Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal fans out there! For the first time since 2003, both former world No. 1 players are not in the top four of the Association of Tennis Professionals, or ATP, rankings.
In the latest rankings that were released on Monday, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori were the four top-ranked men's singles players in the world. Nadal was fifth and Federer was seventh, with Canadian Milos Raonic between them. They were followed by Gael Monfils, Tomas Berdych and Dominic Thiem to make the top 10.
Nadal, whose last Grand Slam title came at Roland Garros in 2014, moved down to fifth after falling to Grigor Dimitrov in the China Open quarter-finals. Federer has had an injury-plagued season and hasn’t played since Wimbledon. The 35-year-old Swiss went 21-7 in 2016 before sidelining himself for the rest of the season. He’s committed to next year’s Hopman Cup in Australia, and is expected to be fully fit for 2017.
Nadal is 39-13 this season and won titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. However, he missed Wimbledon, lost in the first round of the Australian Open and pulled out of the French Open, where he’s won nine times, ahead of the third round.
