Tamim Iqbal's (78) steady knock stabilised the Bangladesh innings as they finished 72 runs short of England's 293 at the close of play on the second day of the first Test at Chittgong. Iqbal's effort was backed up by skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (48) and Mahmudullah (38), but neither lasted long enough to post a three-figure score. The hosts were 221/5 at the close of play with star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan at the crease.
In the first session, debutant Mehdi Hasan got his sixth wicket while Taijul Islam removed Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid before they could frustrate the hosts. After scoring a gritty half-century, Moeen Ali starred with the ball too, removing Imrul Kayes and Mominul Haque in quick succession. Iqbal and Mahmudullah's 90-run stand, though, resurrected the Bangladesh innings before the latter was scalped by Rashid.
Iqbal deserved a century against an opponent he loves scoring against but edged one to the keeper to give Gareth Batty his first international wicket in 11 years. Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan built a solid 58-run stand before Ben Stokes removed the Bangladesh captain with just a couple of overs left for the close of play.
