The first day of the second Test between Australia and South Africa in Hobart on Saturday saw the hosts being bowled out for 85. South Africa opted to field first as Vernon Philander (5/21) with Kyle Abbott taking 3/41 as they ran through the Australian batting line-up for 85. Mitchell Starc (3/49) was at his best for Australia as they too had a troubled start. However, Hashim Amla (47) took his side to safety as the Proteas ended at 171/5 with a lead of 86 runs.

There was added drama. Lachlan Ferguson was one proud man. His brother Callum Ferguson had been handed his Test debut for Australia and Lachlan flew down from London to Hobart, just to see his brother play.

Except, it didn’t turn out too well. Callum Ferguson was run out for just three and Lachlan stormed off in frustration, unwittingly becoming viral in the cricketing world.

Play

If that was not enough, even third umpire Nigel Llong had a moment of frustration, that too on live television. The incident occurred when South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander was hit on shoulder by Aussie captain Steve Smith.

Philander was appealing for an lbw decision against Smith as the captain ran into him as he took off for a run. The Australian skipper tried to avoid the Philander but ended up hitting him. South African skipper Faf du Plessis called for a review but replays showed the ball was just missing the stumps. However, third umpire Llong was clearly heard on the television coverage saying “Get off this ****” as visuals of Philander continued to be shown while he waited for the replay.
