England finally managed to bowl India out for 414 in the second session of the third day in Mohali, conceding a lead of 134 but they will still rue the damage India’s lower-order, especially the trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav, caused.

Ashwin had been dismissed before lunch but on the resumption, it was Jadeja who came out and showcased his limited-overs avatar. He went from 73 to 89 in the space of one over, smashing four boundaries in one Chris Woakes over. That aggression, unfortunately, led to him missing out on a maiden Test century as he went for a big six off Adil Rashid on 90 only to hole out.

But England’s woes were far from over. Jayant Yadav who been patient at the other end, continued to stay positive and took the runs on offer. He moved to a half-century while Umesh Yadav at the other end, hit Moeen Ali for a big six after remaining quiet for 21 balls. England’s frustrations boiled over as they dropped two catches in one over, but Stokes finally got a much-deserved five-wicket haul to bowl India out for 414. The lead? An imposing 134.

Brief scores:

England 283 trail India 414 (Ravindra Jadeja 90, Ravichandran Ashwin 72; Ben Stokes 5/73, Adil Rashid 4/118) by 134 runs
