India were on course to take a 2-0 lead in the five-Test series after going to tea at 33/1 on the fourth day of the third Test in Mohali. They needed just 70 runs more after England were bowled out for 236, giving India a target of 103.

The trouble started for England from the morning when they resumed at 78/4. Nightwatchman Gareth Batty completed his dreadful Test by falling for a duck and Jos Buttler’s aggression soon had the better of him. Joe Root was the only English batsman who showed a sliver of defiance but a fantastic catch from Ajinkya Rahane saw him walking back to the pavilion just before lunch.

By then the match was all but over, but an injured Haseeb Hameed who came in to bat at No. 8, showed resilience. Chris Woakes and Hameed took England a little further but India were having none of it. Mohammed Shami bowled a sensational over where he knocked Woakes on the helmet with one delivery and then followed it up with another snorter that had Woakes fending and caught by Parthiv Patel behind the stumps. For good effect, Shami followed it with another bouncer at new batsman Adil Rashid who top-edged while taking evasive action and England were 195/9.

Hameed, then, started playing a few shots to push England as far as possible but his quest for quick runs finally did the last batsman James Anderson in, who was run out in an effort to get Hameed back on strike.

India lost Murali Vijay early in their chase by Parthiv Patel and Cheteshwar Pujara ensured there would be no hiccups as they both hit confident shots to take their team to 33/1 at tea.

Brief scores:

England 283 and 236 (Joe Root 78, Haseeb Hameed 59 not out; Ravichandran Ashwin 3/81, Mohammed Shami 2/37) trail India 417 and 33/1 (Parthiv Patel 16 not out; Chris Woakes 1/16) by 70 runs
