For the kids who grew up watching football in the 1990s, this goal by Mohamed Faiz Subri in the Malaysian Super League will bear stark resemblance to Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos’ effort.

19 years after Carlos flummoxed the French wall and keeper Fabian Barthez to score that magnificent goal, Subri pulled off something similar while playing for his side Penang State. Subri was standing further away from goal (35 yards) than the former Real Madrid full-back when he lined up to take his shot.

With the ball stationed on the left-flank, the right footed Subri gives it an old fashioned thumping. The inswinger deviously dips away from the keeper, leaving him flat footed. The stadium shook in disbelief and so did the spectators and the players from both sets of teams who watched this spectacle. Brazil’s Marlone and Venezuela women’s Stephanie Roche are two other players who are nominated for the Puskas award along with Subri.
