Churchill Brothers are set to make a return to the I-League after a gap of two years. The All India Football Federation on Thursday reinstated the Goan club in lieu of Dempo FC’s decision to join the growing list of clubs withdrawing from the premier football competition.

The decision was taken at an emergency committee meeting in New Delhi on Thursday.

All the members unanimously agreed that Churchill Brothers should be brought back into the I-League, PTI reported.

“The meeting was called in compliance with the order passed by the Delhi High Court on November 28, 2016, wherein the court directed AIFF to consider the representation of Churchill Brothers SC dated November 23, 2016,” the AIFF said in a statement.

The Goan club was removed from the I-League after it failed to fulfil the club licensing criteria.

Churchill Brothers had subsequently filed a writ petition in the Delhi High Court challenging the decision.

Three Goan clubs — Dempo SC, Salgaocar FC and Sporting Clube de Goa — have withdrawn from the I-League in protest to the AIFF’s proposed roadmap to restructure domestic football.
