The end came very quickly on Monday. England managed to add just 13 more runs to their overnight total, collapsing in a heap for 195 and handing India a comprehensive innings and 36-run victory. With it, India took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, with one to go.

And behind this collapse was the world’s best bowler. Ravichandran Ashwin, fresh from a five-wicket haul in the first innings and having taken two quick wickets at the end of Sunday’s play, never looked like wanting to stretch it. The doosra accounted for Jonny Bairstow after a battling 51, Jake Ball’s stumps were castled and Adil Rashid holed out. Ashwin took James Anderson at the end to take his sixth wicket, to finish with innings figures of 6/55 and total match figures of 12/167.

It had all gone wrong for England after they had managed to put themselves at 230/2 at one stage, thanks to Keaton Jennings’s debut century. A collapse meant they fell to 400 all out, which was thought to be a good score. England did have India at 279/4, 305/6 and 364/7 but India’s habit of putting on late runs helped them again. Virat Kohli stood out with a magnificent 235, his highest Test knock and Jayant Yadav at No. 9 added more glory with a 104. India finished at 631 all out, a massive lead of 231 runs.

Staring down the barrel, England tried to be aggressive in their second innings and Joe Root played well for his 77. But barring Bairstow, there was hardly any resistance after that as they folded for a humiliating innings defeat, only the third time in Test history that a team has scored 400 in their first innings and lost. A series which England started off so well in Rajkot has gone very wrong with them. A 0-3 loss with one Test to go means Alastair Cook’s team really need to take a deep hard look at themselves.
