Australia beat Pakistan by 39 runs in the first Test in Brisbane on Monday. However, the Aussies were made to work hard as Asad Shafiq’s brilliant knock of 137 gave Pakistan a fighting chance to chase down a world-record target of 490. In the end, Australia managed to scrape through owing to the heroics of Mitchell Starc, who took 4/119.
Pakistan began day five with 382/8, with Shafiq and Yasir Shah at the crease. Shafiq was the first to go, with Starc bowling a superb short ball to dismiss the batsman on 449. Shah followed a run later after being run out by skipper Steve Smith handing Australian a memorable win. This was Australia’s first win against Pakistan in six years and Pakistan’s 10th consecutive Test loss in Australia.
