Dipa Karmakar scored a brilliant 15.066 to finish fourth in the women's vault final, a first for an Indian woman gymnast at the Olympics, on Sunday.
She scored 14.866 in her first vault attempt and pulled off the dangerous Produnova vault in her second attempt to secure a 15.266.
Thanks to her high score, Karmakar rose to second in the standings with two gymnasts to go, including the 2012 bronze medalist, Maria Paseka of Russia, and the 2016 Olympic all-round champion Simone Biles of the United States. Paseka scored 15.253 in her attempt to win silver with Biles scoring 15.966 to comprehensively win the gold.
Karmakar ended up finishing fourth as the bronze medal went to Switzerland's Giulia Steingruber with a score of 15.216. But even though she may have narrowly missed out on a medal, Karmakar, and her country, can be very proud of her inspirational feat at the greatest stage of them all.
