The support staff of the Indian men’s cricket team has rejected a 25% hike in their salaries offered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, reported The Indian Express on Thursday.
According to the report, the support staff rejected the offer as they had been promised a 100% hike by former administrators in India’s cricket body who had to vacate their offices after the Supreme Court constituted a four-member Committee of Administrators to run the BCCI.
India’s support staff, which comprises batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar along with others, were reportedly assured by former president Anurag Thakur in December that their demands would be looked into after the Supreme Court verdict on the Justice Lodha reforms. However, after the ruling administration was changed, the matter was not resolved.
According to an unnamed source quoted in the Indian Express report, the current BCCI CEO Rahul Johri proposed a 25% hike which was rejected by the staff as it fell below their expectations.
“The problem is that a few members of the support staff, such as Bangar, have been there for more than three years now and still they are working for the same salaries they were drawing when they joined,” the source told the paper. “It has been a case of discrimination and even the Indian team coach Anil Kumble and captain Virat Kohli felt that the support staff need a good hike.”
