Liverpool’s Emre Can secured the winner as the Red came from a goal down to notch a hard-fought 2-1 win over Burnley at Anfield on Sunday. The win kept Jurgen Klopp’s team within distance of a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The hosts looked out of sorts in the game but the coach was pleased with the way they won “ugly” to earn their first back-to-back league wins in 2017.
Ashley Barnes scored his club’s first goal at Anfield since 1975 to give Burnley an early lead. However, Georginio Wijnaldum was quick to to equalise in the first-half injury-time. The winner then came from Can after the hour mark as he collected a pass from Divock Origi and unleashed a right-foot shot from 25 yards which the Burnley goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, could not save.
“The performance was good enough to win the game but the result is massive for us, it’s the first ugly game we have won,” Liverpool manager Klopp told Sky Sports. “Usually when we are not that good we lose.”
This was a crucial win for Liverpool, as it not only kept them fourth on the table and in Champions League contention, but also got them a point behind second-placed Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in third. With 55 points, the Reds are still 11 points below Chelsea, but five points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal.
