Yung-Jan Chan and Martina Hingis upset fourth seeds Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova in their quarter-final at Indian Wells on Tuesday evening. The sixth seeds defeated the Indo-Czech team in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 20 minutes.

Chan and Hingis put in 70% of their first serves and converted 55% points of those. In comparison, Mirza and Strycova put in 62% of their first serves, converting 53% points off them. Chan and Hingis converted seven of the 14 break points they faced on Mirza and Strycova’s serve, while saving five of the 10 break points on their serve.

Three of the five breaks of serve on Chan and Hingis’ serve came in the first set as did four of the seven breaks of serve on Mirza and Strycova’s serve. However, the higher ranked team couldn’t consolidate their advantage during decisive moments in the encounter, allowing Chan and Hingis to capitalise on the momentum and make their way further in the draw.

Incidentally, while Mirza and Hingis were former partners who were facing off, the duo’s first title as a team too had come at Indian Wells in 2015.

Chan and Hingis await the winner between top-seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova, and Svetlana Kuznetsova and Kristina Mladenovic in the semi-final.
