Wayne Rooney could return to his boyhood club Everton this summer from Manchester United, according to a report in The Independent.

As per the report, sources both at Everton and Manchester United feel the deal is “likely to happen” through a free transfer.

Rooney left Everton as a 18-year-old in 2004 to join Manchester United. But he has seen his stock plunge in recent times, losing his place in both United and England’s first team squads.

Though West Ham United are also in the fray, the report added that Rooney’s first choice was to return to his childhood club, accepting wages of £150,000 a week which would mark a paycut over what he earns at Old Trafford.

West Ham United also entered the race to sign the England striker, however, Rooney’s first choice is to return to Everton, who he left for Old Trafford in 2004 as an 18-year-old. There was also speculation over whether Rooney would move to the Chinese Super League but the report referenced Rooney’s representatives as saying that the 31-year-old was put off by the level of football there.
