Manchester United discard Bastian Schweinsteiger scored on his Major League Soccer debut in Chicago Fire’s 2-2 draw against Montreal Impact on Saturday.

Schweinsteiger, who completed his move to Chicago last week, celebrated his entry into the new club with a solid header in the 17th minute that handed them the lead.

“It’s a great moment when in your first match you score a goal, though I’d rather have a win,” Schweinsteiger told CSN after the match. “I think we deserved the draw. We had good chances, but we didn’t finish,” added the German World Cup winner, who spent most of last season sidelined by United manager Jose Mourinho.

Under the Portuguese manager, Schweinsteiger was asked to train with the reserves team and was only handed cameo roles in the first team from October.

Mourinho on Friday had come out and admitted to have wrongly treated the German midfielder. “After knowing him as a person and professional - the way he behaved and respected my decisions - yes I regret it. There’s no problem for me to admit that. He knows that,” Mourinho had said.

Scweinsteiger made a great impression in Chicago though. But the goal could not ensure victory for Chicago, as Montreal scored two goals, including a 90th minute strike to make it 2-1 with moments left in the game.

Chicago’s Solignac scored in the third minute of second-half stoppage time from just outside the 18-yard box to hand his side a thrilling draw.
