The India men’s team notched their first victory of the tournament, beating Belarus. However, the women’s team went down to Ukraine in the third round of the World Team Chess Championship at Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on Monday.

Indian men, the sixth seeds at the event, edged out Belarus 2.5 – 1.5. The best performer for India was Baskaran Adhiban, who won his game against Vladislav Kovalev. Fourth seeded India women lost to Ukraine 1.5-2.5, with Inna Gaponenko getting the win over Tania Sachdev. The rest of the games ended in a draw.

The men will take on USA in the fourth round, while the women’s team will play Poland.

After three rounds, Poland is leading in the men’s section without having dropped single point. Russia and China trail by a matchpoint. Among the women, Russia and Ukraine lead with Georgia and Poland are one step behind them.
