In the growing list of applicants applying for the position of team India coach, another name has been added to list. Former West Indies opener Phil Simmons has applied for the post, according to various news reports.
A Mumbai Mirror report quoted sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirming that Simmons, who played 26 Test matches for the West Indies, has sent his application.
Simmons began his coaching career with the Zimbabwe cricket team in 2004. He has also coached the West Indies team twice, including bagging the World T20 title with them in 2016. The 54-year-old was also associated with the Irish national team.
Simmons joins the ranks of Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus and Dodda Ganesh who have also applied. The interview to select the new India coach will be held on July 10 in Mumbai. The members of the Cricket Advisory Committee, which include Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, will be taking the interview. Shastri is the reported frontrunner to bag the coveted position.
