The Board of Control for Cricket in India, on Monday, announced that Shikhar Dhawan would replace fellow opener Murali Vijay during India’s tour of Sri Lanka later in the month. The Tamil Nadu batsman was sidelined with a wrist injury during Australia’s tour of India.

BCCI, in a press release stated that Vijay “has complained of pain in his right wrist while playing a preparatory match”. The BCCI medical team has subsequently advised Vijay to continue his rehabilitation program. Dhawan has not featured in India’s Test team since playing New Zealand in October 2016. The left-hander had an outstanding run in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, where he smashed 338 runs from five games.

Virat Kohli’s side will play a three-match Test series followed by a five-match One-day International series and a lone Twenty20 International, starting from July 26. This will be the first full series between the teams in eight years.
