Canadian 18-year-old qualifier Denis Shapovalov ousted French eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from the US Open on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(3) triumph.
Shapovalov became the youngest man in the third round of a Grand Slam since Aussie Bernard Tomic at the 2011 Australian Open and at the US Open since American Donald Young in 2007.
The Canadian, who posted a stunning upset over Rafael Nadal in the third round of the Montreal Masters en route to his semi-final finish in the tournament, put Tsonga on the backfoot with his pacy style-of-play.
While the three-time quarter-finalist did take a stab at making a comeback in the match when he broke back Shapovalov to equalise in the third set, it was far too late for him as the southpaw took a convincing lead in the third set tie-break to take the win after two hours and 12 minutes of play.
Next up for Shapovalov will be Britain’s Kyle Edmund. Edmund defeated American Steve Johnson in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, 7-6(4).
