India’s Ankur Mittal won silver in the double trap event at the ISSF World Championship Shotgun in Moscow on Tuesday.

Mittal narrowly missed out to Russia’s Vitaly Fokeev, who took home the gold. China’s Hu Binyuan bagged bronze.

Mittal topped the qualification round as he scored 145 in five rounds with scores of 28, 30, 29, 30, 28. It is also India’s first medal in double trap at the World championships since Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore claimed one in 2003.

The final was a closely contested affair with Mittal and Fokeev fighting neck and neck. Their scores were tied at 66 when Fokeev scored two points to edge Mittal out. Nerves clearly got the better of the Indian as the Russian edged past him towards the end.

Meanwhile, in the finals of the Junior double trap competition, Ahvar Rizvi bagged silver. Rizvi scored 66, one less than gold medal winner James Dedman of Great Britain. Shardul Vihan, who also qualified for the final, finished sixth with a score of 19. However, the junior India team bagged gold in the group event. Vihan, Rizvi and Shapath Bharadwaj scored a combined total of 401 to finish on top.
