India’s Sania Mirza and Chinese partner Shuai Peng lost their women’s doubles semi-final clash 6-4, 6-4 against second seeds Martina Hingis of Switzerland and her Taiwanese partner Yung-Jan Chan on Thursday. Mirza’s loss brought an end to the Indian challenge at Flushing Meadows.

Mirza and Peng were tested by Hingis and Chan throughout the match that lasted for an hour and 27 minutes. The Indo-Chinese pair broke early in the first, but the second seeds immediately fought back to make it 3-3. Hingis and Chan upped the ante and soon took the opening set 6-4.

The second set was a fiercely competitive set with Mirza and Peng getting a crucial break on Hingis’ serve to go 3-1 up in the second set. But Mirza was broken in the following game. Trailing 3-4, Hingis saved three break points on her serve to make it 4-4, in a game that witnessed seven deuces.

The momentum immediately swung towards the Swiss-Taiwanese pair’s way as they broke Mirza’s serve to go 5-4 up. Chan then saw her serve out to secure a place in the final.
