Indian shuttlers in fray at the Polish International in Bierun, the Ethiopia International in Addis Ababa and the Belgian Junior tournament in Herstal posted mixed results on Friday.

Daniel S Farid reached the men’s singles quarter-finals in Bierun. In Ethiopia, Aditya Joshi reached the men’s singles third round while MR Arjun and Shlok Ramchandran
reached the men’s doubles quarter-finals.

Lastly, in Herstal, Sanjay Aman Farogh and Vaishnavi Jakka Reddy reached the pre-quarter-finals in the boys and girls singles respectively.

Here’s a recap of the day’s play in the two tournaments:

Polish International

Farid, who reached the men’s singles draw after coming through the qualifiers made it count as he posted two huge wins over higher ranked opponents. In the first round, the 20-year-old defeated the eighth-seeded Luka Wraber of Austria 21-12, 21-9. In the second round, Farid beat Russian Ivan Rosev 21-16, 21-17. In Saturday’s quarter-final, Rosev will play the third seed Jia Lee Zii of Malaysia.

It was, however, a disappointing second round exit for sixth seeded Harsheel Dani. Dani won his opening round match against Ireland’s Nhat Nyugen 21-14, 22-20. But, he lost his second-round match to David Kim Kristensen of Denmark 16-21, 21-17, 21-17.

In the women’s doubles, Maneesha K and Arathi Sara Sunil reached the quarter-finals after posting two consecutive wins on Friday. In their opening round, the Indians defeated the Polish team of Magdalena Pulska and Zuzanna Parysz 21-14, 21-12. In the second round, the Indian duo beat the Danish pair of Susan Ekelund and Janne Kornum 21-15, 21-11.

In Saturday’s quarter-final, Maneesha and Arathi will take on the Czech team of Magdalena Lajdova and Denisa Sikalova.

Ethiopia International

The second-seeded Joshi defeated Ethiopian Fanthhun Estefanos in the first round by a comfortable margin, 21-1, 21-15. In the second round, the Indian got past Egypt’s Mahmoud Montaser Mahmoud 21-8, 22-11. Another Egyptian in the eighth seeded Mahmoud Mostafa Kamel awaits Joshi in the pre-quarter-finals on Saturday.

In men’s doubles, the top-seeded Indian team of Arjun and Shlok reached the last-eight with a second round win over the Egyptian team of Omar Elsayegh and Montaser Mahmoud. The Indians, who had received a bye in the first round, defeated the Egyptians comprehensively 21-8, 21-6. They face the Ugandan duo of Herbert Ebayo and Jacob Musisi in the quarter-finals.

Belgian Juniors

Vaishnavi, the second seed, defeated Belgium’s Siebelijn De Sutter in the second round to move into the third round. The fifteen-year-old, who had received a bye in the first round, won 21-7, 21-2 to set up a pre-quarter-final against Germany’s Maria Kuse on Saturday.

Seventeen-year-old Aman Farogh posted two back-to-back wins on Friday to reach the third round in the singles draw. In the first round, Aman Farogh beat Swede Marcus Boman 21-14, 21-19. He followed this with a second-round upset over the sixth seed Calisir Yazgan of Turkey, 21-13, 21-16.

In Saturday’s third round, Aman Farogh will play 10th seeded Zack Russ of England.
