India women’s compound archers will have a shot at history after they set up a team final against Colombia in the World Archery Championship in Mexico City on Thursday.
The Indian team of Trisha Deb, Lily Chanu Paunam and Jyoti Surekha Vennam defeated Germany 232-227 in the semi-finals and could become the first Indian team to be crowned world champions if they can overcome Colombia on Saturday.
India has won four silver medals at the senior World Archery Championships, but never a gold. “We are so proud of ourselves; it’s amazing to make the gold final,” Paonam was quoted as saying by worldarchery.org.
According to the report, the Indian squad had the highest per-match average of any team in the field in Mexico. Deb, Paonam and Vennam scored matches of 232, 233 and 232 points as they beat Russia, Denmark and then Germany in the elimination matches on the Campo Marte.
Speaking to the website, Jyothi Surekha Vennam added: “We will shoot the same as today and try to win gold. It will be our first time shooting against Colombia and they are good, so we’re excited about it.”
