India’s wait for that elusive gold medal at the World Archery Championship was extended for another year after the women’s compound team went down to Colombia 234-228 in the final at Mexico City on Saturday.

The Indian team of Trisha Deb, Lely Chanu Paonam and Jyothi Surekha Vennam had made it to the summit clash with a highest per-match average in the championship and were expected to end India’s gold medal drought.

But the Indian’s failed to start the final on a positive note as they dropped five points in the first six arrows and ended up playing catch up through out. The Colombian team of Sara Lopez, Alejandra Usquiano and Nora Valdez were, however, at the top of their game from the first arrow and had just six 9s out of 24 arrows shot in the final.

The loss means this was India’s fifth silver in the championship and the only medal in the 2017 edition after the recurve archers failed to challenge for the podium in team and individual events.
