Remember Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud’s stunning ‘scorpion kick’ goal against Crystal Palace in January? It is now the best goal of the year.

Giroud received the Puskas Award, an accolade for the “most beautiful goal” of the season, at the Best Fifa football awards in London on Monday. The trophy is named in honour of Hungary great Ferenc Puskas.

The French striker won it for his spectacular ‘scorpion-kick’ against Premier League opponents Crystal Palace in January. The strike saw him combine with his team mates across the field and then flick a volley with his left foot that went in off the crossbar and into the goal.

Giroud’s kick won ahead of goals from Venezuela’s Deyna Castellanos, 18, and South African goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke, who had scored a remarkable overhead bicycle kick for Baroka against Orlando Pirates.
